Spring Equinox is Approaching... but what does that mean for me?

Next week marks the Spring Equinox.
On Tuesday 20th March the sun will shine directly on to the equator and the length or the day and night as almost equal. The March equinox marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator (this is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator). In the North Hemisphere the Spring Equinox marks the first day of the astronomical Spring – hooray!
Equinox’s happen twice a year – Spring and Autumn. The Spring Equinox is known as a time for rebirth – it brings with it more light and hopefully some warmth, after the long winter months.

All life on Earth needs the sunlight to survive, so you can see why particular Equinox is celebrated so much throughout history. As you walk along the street you can almost hear the plants, grass and flower buds rejoicing as Spring approaches. They all wake up from their cold slumber and come to life in a display beauty and colour. The birds start singing a little louder in the mornings, daffodils start to appear and natures babies are born! (Such as lambs, for example).
Spring is also a lovely reminder for us to use this opportunity to awaken ourselves and bring some new energy into our homes. People tend to feel happier when Spring arrives – looking forward to warmer, sunnier months and spending time outdoors.

Here are a few ideas of how you can celebrate the Spring Equinox in your home.
Spring Clean your Cupboards -
The age-old expression – to Spring Clean. This is a great time of year to de-clutter, deep clean and let some fresh air into your home. Work through your home from top to bottom and get rid of things you no longer use. Chuck away things that don’t work and perhaps donate items which still have some life left in them but you no longer use to a local charity. Try to be ruthless and detach yourself from things which no longer serve you. Make space for new energy in your home. You will love the feeling of the house being clutter free once this process is finished.
Deep Clean the House –
Take this opportunity to have a really good clean. Ask your children to go through their toys and put any in a box they no longer play with – these can be donated to charity (beware though, this may take time and a sudden interest in a toy they haven’t played with for months could possibly be sparked!!) help them to appreciate how good clearing space for new things feels. This is re-birthing for them, remember!

Give the Space as Smudge -
When you have finished the declutter and your deep clean, give the space a smudge!
Take care to make sure you go right into the back of the cupboards with the tool you decide to use… right into the corners, nooks and crannies! Get rid of any stale energies which no longer serve you – be sure to have a window open to allow these stagnant energies to escape out of.
Look after You -
Ok. Now it’s also important to look after yourself during this time. Listen to your needs. You need to flow with the natural balance which accompanies the Spring rebirth. Is there anything in your life that needs to change? Is it time you took up that hobby? Joined the gym? Changed your job? Use the cosmic energy around at this time to help you decide what you would like to change, if anything, and make it happen – this can be your re-birthing.

Here are some idea’s of how to quickly add something new and healthy into your day –
Sunlight – spend as much time as you can in the sun (but make sure you wear a decent SPF!). Temperatures tend to sneak up a bit in the Spring so make the most of it and get outside. The Equinox sun radiates a vibrational energy which ignites new ideas! Everyone knows how much a little bit of sun does us and Vitamin D from the sun is crucial for our well-being.

Meditate – try putting some time aside each day to meditate. This could be on your own, or with a guided meditation online (look out for my guided meditations on my website, coming soon!).

Drink plenty of water – make sure you drink plenty of water throughout your day. Water is so crucial to our well-being and not enough people drink enough of it! If you find water boring try adding a slice of lemon or lime into it to give it a refreshing twist!

Yoga – use this time of the sun being so powerful to give thanks. Do some simple sun salutations when you get up in the morning – this is a great way to wake up, bring your body to life and also give thanks back to that big ball in the sky!

Get the kids involved – why not use this time to plant some seeds with the children? Spring is a great time to do that and children love getting involved. Go to the garden centre together and choose which flowers they’d like to grow. Get them to help you water them and teach them the art of nurturing the plants, like we nurture our children to help them grow big, strong and happy.

Most of all, just embrace this new season. Be happy. Make time for you. Listen to your body. Breathe. And smile.
